In 2018 I started with the company Uk Hempcrete as a trainee Carpenter. This began my transformation from Architecture into working with wood. Uk Hempcrete is a natural building company specialising in the use of hempcrete (or ‘hemp-lime’) alongside other natural materials. It’s a brilliant material that allows for solid, breathable and highly insulative walls to be cast in a matter of days.

My role within the team was to primarily construct softwood timber frames and hempcrete shuttering for interesting new builds and the retrofit of historic buildings. Working with UKH took me to some amazing locations throughout the UK and since casting hempcrete is a very volunteer friendly construction method, I also met a bunch of interesting characters along the way.

Below are two highlighted projects from my time with UKH, one is a douglas fir framed house in Pembrokeshire the second is a hempcrete house on the Orkney Islands …
